X-100 Natural Seal Wood Protective Coating

X-100 Natural Seal Wood Protective Coating is designed to penetrate wood. X-100 Wood Protective Coating is an EPA VOC compliant wood finish consisting of essential wood protecting ingredients blended in a paraffinic oil which is non-sensitive to ultraviolet rays. X-100 Wood Protective Coating is for use on all vertical wood surfaces susceptible to moisture damage including cedar, redwood, pine, plywood, T1-11, cypress, fir, dimensional lumber, logs, and roofs. X-100 Wood Protective Coating is available in ultra transparent stains with natural oxides. The ultra transparent technology enables the natural wood grain to show through allowing for a natural wood finish. X-100 Wood Protective Coating is the same formula as the old X-100 Natural Seal Wood Preservative. Made in the USA.

Popular colors of X-100 like Cedartone Gold and Cedartone Brown are kept in stock in our warehouse in Northern MN.

WeatherSeal Log Home Finish

WeatherSeal is an oil/resin-based semi-transparent exterior wood stain that, when mixed properly, achieves a thick, pudding-like texture. WeatherSeal Log Home Finish is creamy thick yet penetrating formula clings to vertical surfaces, virtually eliminating the drippy mess and wasteful runoff typical of regular stains. Yet, like magic, it soaks into the wood leaving a rich natural wood appearance. Creamy smooth application, no pigment settling, and uniform coverage that soaks into the wood leaving a transparent, natural wood appearance. Its highly durable oil-based resins, waterproofers, and special performance boosters really hold up to the elements. WeatherSeal is designed for use on log homes, wood fences, wood and shake siding, pressure-treated wood and most above ground wood surfaces where a longer-lasting natural wood look is desired. Low V.O.C. clean air formula. Fortified with borates. Made in the USA. Due to the thick consistency of WeatherSeal stain, a paddle mixer is recommended to fully stir the finish before applying. See Paddle Mixers. Use a quality synthetic bristle stain brush to apply Weatherseal. Because Weatherseal contains water, the bristles in a natural bristle brush will, over time, become limp and waterlogged and lose their ability to properly hold and spread Weatherseal in an even manner. Also, a good quality brush will allow for easier application and overall better appearance. Roller Applications work especially well over rough-sawn wood surfaces, T1-11, etc. It can also be effective over smoother surfaces if the roll-applied stain is immediately back-brushed to even out the appearance. A 3/4" knit polyester/wool blend roller is recommended for best results. Spray Application will work, though brush application is best. If you choose to spray, use a heavy-duty airless sprayer using 0.15 - 0.17 tips. To thin for spraying: Start at 4 oz. of mineral spirits per gallon and slowly adding more as needed. Don’t add too much, though, because once it’s in there you won’t be able to get it back out! When spraying, back-brushing is absolutely required for proper adhesion. See Technical Data for details. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of mill glaze, burnished surfaces, bark, cambium layers, and fungal organisms. Do not apply over previously painted or varnished wood surfaces without first removing the old finish coat. See Technical Data for details. At 70ºF: To Touch: 4-6 hours. Complete Hard Cure in 14-21 days. Longer drying time needed in high humidity or low temperatures.

Great Lakes Log Crafters Association - 2024 Conference

The Great Lakes Log Crafters Association had its annual meeting and conference, this year near Trego, WI, at Trinity Woods (formerly Heartwood Resort). As usual, the conference attendees were a combination of active and retired handcrafted log builders, owner-builders, and log home industry associates. The camaraderie is great and the education is memorable. Here’s a summary of the weekend’s programming:

Day 1: Friday, May 17, 2024 GLLCA President Nate Heim welcomed the group and introduced past President Bob Kenel. Bob discussed and demonstrated the placement of concentrated borate rods. Then the group installed borate rods into the exterior timbers of the facility. Back indoors, Jim Parma of Bell Pole presented on sourcing logs, the costs of transportation across country, and advantages of using local species by region. Following on the topic of transporting logs, Nate Heim of Heim Handcrafted Log Homes presented on moving logs from the yard to the building site across state lines. After that Nate Demers of Weatherwize spoke about utilizing modern digital tools for administrating and marketing a log business. The day ended with a round table discussion, a wine and cheese social sponsored by Sashco, and after supper was the annual fundraiser auction.

Day 2: Saturday, May 18, 2024 Day two began with the Annual General Meeting, chaired by President Nate Heim. During the AGM, the work of IMTA (International Mass Timber Alliance) was discussed, and the importance of researching the performance of log and all mass timber. After the GLLCA meeting, Duane Sellman of Sellman Log Structures shared pictures and reported from his attendance to the ILBA 50th anniversary conference at Chateau Mon- tebello. Mike and Deb Hansen of Heritage Logcraft led the group in a strategic planning session. After working on organizational business, the presentations got back to building and ways to join traditional craft with modern techology. Curtis Lindberg from Backwoods Log Homes demon- strated the use of SketchUp for drafting log plans and then showed some projects with head-scratching stereometry in some creative roof structures. Dovetail corners were then discussed and demonstrated by Cam Wait from Frontier Builders, and many lessons had come out of the experience of GLLCA building a collaborative structure in October 2023. In Tech Talk session, Donovan Dums of The Natural Log Homes showed a way he makes his own oak dowel pegs and Mike and Deb Hansen shared pictures of their full-scribed sauna build and Deane Hillbrand shared experiences he had in joinery when traveling to Japan. Next year’s conference is planned to be hosted by Frontier Builders in Land O’ Lakes, WI, with tentative dates the last weekend of April. Updates will be posted at www.gllca.org.
